Lok Manch

Lok Manch (people’s forum) is envisioned as a movement of and by the common people comprising Dalits, Adivasis, women, minorities, urban poor and other marginalized communities. It is a common platform/forum created to strengthen the bargaining power of the priority communities. At present this is being run as a program through the initiative taken by JESA (Jesuits in Social Action), Delhi; however in future it is envisioned to become people’s movement.   Fr. Pascal Xalxo SJ. is the unit coordinator of “Lok Manch, of the Darjeeling Unit. Ms Geeta Tirkey and Basil Ekka are the animators of Lok Manch, in HLDRC.  There are four partner organizations: 1. HLDRC, Matigara, 2. Seva Kendra Siliguri, 3.Sewa Sadan  Jalpaiguri and 4. Gramin Vikash Kendra, Kalabari. Under this project, the Darjeeling Unit, comprising 4 organizations work together to ensure the accessibility of the food entitlement enshrined under the NFSA-2013. Under this project 2 community leaders’ training program was conducted by HLDRC on 21st January-2017, one at the centre and one in Dharanipur TE. on 23rd January-2017. Around 20 community leaders were present at the centre and 55 in Dharanipur TE. The team of HLDRC was also acted as the resource team in Jalpaiguri Sewa Sadan’s training program. On 30th of January there was a meeting organized by Right To Food Campaign, West Bengal at LPC, Matigara and both TOTs and the members of Lok Manch participated in this meeting. In this meeting it was resolved to conduct “Thala Bajao Abhiyan” in all 4 blocks of Siliguri sub-division and serve a memorandum to each BDOs regarding the problems of tea garden people.
